This year’s Spartan Race promises to be a “beast” of an event. Back by popular demand, the challenging obstacle course has added an extreme element to the competition.

Staged this weekend at Flathead Lake Lodge in Bigfork, the Spartan Race is introducing the Beast, a 14-mile course with 40 obstacles. The traditional Sprint and the Beast share the same first five miles, but after that the Beast route continues over rugged terrain overlooking Flathead Lake.

In addition to showcasing the dexterity and fitness of thousands of participants, the Spartan Race is an economic shot in the arm for the Flathead Valley as local businesses patiently await the glorious summer tourist season. This “shoulder season” race — with 9,000 participants and spectators expected — is a winner on every level.

Let the games begin!

Levies give schools a boost

Congratulations to Somers-Lakeside and Whitefish school districts for their success in receiving voter approval for levies in their respective districts.

The need was especially great in the Somers-Lakeside district, which has not seen a levy approved since 2006. The $185,000 levy will provide funding for urgent needs such as removing asbestos-containing tiles and walls, upgrading outdated plumbing and electrical fixtures, and replacing or repairing a freezer that has the potential to result in spoiled food and sickened children.

The Whitefish Elementary District levy will provide $36,000 to cover day-to-day expenses.

But whether urgent or routine, the cost of educating our young people is a cost that must be paid. It is an investment not just in their future, but in the future of our society as a whole.

 Welcome back, Dave

A welcome back is in order for Dave Hoerner at Kalispell City Airport.

Hoerner, long a mainstay in the Flathead Valley aviation world, has returned as part of a new management team at Red Eagle Aviation.

Hoerner, Mark Tudahl and B.J. Holman are now at the controls for the airport business that they will rename Montana Air Ventures.

We wish them well in their new aerial venture.
