Class A state track: Mundel wins 1,600, Nagler 1st in high jump

LAUREL — Columbia Falls senior Samantha Mundel nearly eclipsed a state record on her way to the state championship in the 1,600-meter run on Friday at the Class A state track and field championships.

Mundel ran a blazing fast time in the mile, finishing more than 13 seconds ahead of the field in a time of 5:06.27, finishing just .49 seconds behind the state record set in 1986 by Miles City’s Kathleen Monaghan.

Her victory helped the Columbia Falls girls to third place in the team standings after seven events.

Corvallis leads both girls and boys competitions.

Allyson Gimbel finished second in the shot put for the Wildkats, Carla Nicosia was third in the high jump and Kiara Burlage was sixth in the long jump.  

Whitefish’s Kate Doorn finished second in the high jump, clearing 5 feet. Grace Kurtz was fifth in the 400 and Sarah Latcham was fifth in the 1,600.

Polson’s Lydia Bowman was fourth in pole vault and Mariah Corrigan was fourth in the javelin.

Whitefish junior Jed Nagler won the boys high jump title, clearing 6-5.

Brian FauntLeRoy finished sixth in the 400 and Luke Cardon was fifth in the 800 for the Bulldogs.

Stephen Lindsay was fourth in the long jump for Columbia Falls and Kyler Burns was sixth in the high jump.
