A record-setting day for Bigfork freshman Bryn Morley on Friday at Legends Stadium set the Bigfork girls in a fantastic position entering the final day of the Class B track and field championships, leading the state with more of their top events to come.

Morley and her well-decorated sister Makena, the defending champion in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, set a blistering pace in the 1,600-meter run. Bryn pulled away at the end to finish in 4:47.76, setting what stood as an all-class record, beating the mark of 4:48.24 set by Townsend’s Chiara Warner in 2013. Makena, who also finished second in 2013, finished in second in 5:01.69.

“I could feel that I was going pretty fast,” Bryn said. “It felt really good.”

The record turned into only a Class B mark less than 15 minutes later when an equally fast Class AA race finished a second faster.

However, the race marked 18 points for the Valkyries on a day that netted Bigfork 43 points to lead Plains by 11 entering today.

Gabby Eaton won the pole vault in an event that was held Thursday night, clearing 9-6 and winning on attempts.

Haile Norred finished second in the 400, one place ahead of Bryn and Riley Coleman was sixth in discus.

Plains senior Hailey Phillips won her third-straight title in the 400, winning the race in 57.69.

The Bigfork boys, who are competing without one of their top athletes after defending high jump champion Josh Sandry injured his leg during divisionals last week, managed to move to second place in the boys standings, well behind defending champion Manhattan.

Vikings junior Logan Morley easily won the 3,200, finishing in 10:04.38, nearly six seconds ahead of the field.

Morley finished third in the 800, setting a personal record of 1:57.75. Teammate Tyler Iverson finished second in the discus with a throw of 161 feet.

Troy’s Sean Opland couldn’t defend his state title in the 400, running neck-and-neck with Manhattan’s Caleb Neth down the homestretch, even diving at the finish line in an attempt to cross first. Neth won in 49.46 seconds, three-hundredths of a second ahead of Opland’s 49.49. Troy’s Pate Scott finished second to Neth in the long jump.

Eureka’s Braden Their finished sixth in the discus.

The meet begins at 9 a.m. today with the boys shot put. The 400 relay leads off the track events at 10:30 a.m.
