Glacier's Mann captures AA state golf title

HELENA — Steady play earned Glacier’s Tommy Mann an individual Class AA state golf championship on Friday at Bill Roberts Golf Course.

Mann, a senior, posted back-to-back rounds of 3-under-par 69 for a 138 total and a two-shot victory over Joey Moore of Billings West.

Moore shot 70 both days.

Garrett Woodin of Billings West was third, 72-69—141.

“It’s been a special week,” Mann said.

“The win has taken a weight off my shoulders.’

Mann finished 16th last year at state. He was fifth as a sophomore and fourth his freshman season.

“I was driving well, putting well, with the exception of two lost balls, one each day,” he said.

“I had an eagle both days. Besides that, I played pretty conservative and pretty consistent.”

He said his 138 score was his best total ever for 36 holes by three strokes.

“I was able to make most of the fairways, get on the greens and make a lot of putts,” he said.

“I’ve led tournaments before, so I was pretty comfortable with having a lead (from start to finish).”

This marked Mann’s second win of the season. He won in Missoula back in August.

Flathead’s Ryan Keenan, a tournament favorite along with Mann, struggled on the final day and had to settle for sixth place, 70-74—144. He trailed Mann by just one stroke after Thursday’s session.

Glacier senior Teigan Avery, who was shooting for her third-straight state championship, came up short this time.

Avery shot 73 both days to finish with a 146.

Hayden Flohr of Billings West, rebounded on the final 18 to win by two shots.

Flohr shot 76-68—144.

McKenna Tinseth of Glacier, 84-83—167, finished eighth.

The Glacier girls, 686, finished second to Great Falls High, 664, in the team standings.

Flathead was 10th, 796. Liz Lorentz led the Bravettes, 91-91—182.

Billing West claimed the boys team trophy with a 580 total. That’s a new Class AA team record, breaking the old mark of Billings West set in 2004.

Glacier, 613, was fifth and Flathead, 618, sixth.
