LETTER: Don't just nudge bears out of town
This policy of nudging bears along, when they come up in our neighborhood, should be scrapped ASAP; it is a dangerous policy that puts the citizens in serious danger.
Example, the woman in Kalispell that was attacked in her own home recently and now today in the Inter Lake we learn she died. To serve and protect is what we want, we don’t want to see law enforcement just nudging these bears along; dart them or kill them is the answer. To accustom bears to humans is nutty.
Right where we live they just sit there eating out of our garbage containers and if we put our porch light on, they just keep doing their business, no fear of humans. That’s where the problem resides.
If we get rid of them, eventually they will get the message. We don’t want to hear why they come into town or cities, we just don’t want our lives to be compromised by some hungry bears that can eat humans alive. Who wants to experience that kind of death sentence?
We need exactly what it says on the side of patrol cars: To serve and protect. Period. —Marcel Guy Cote, Libby
