Class AA soccer: Flathead boys, girls fall in state tournament play-in games

MISSOULA — Missoula Sentinel scored early in each half, running away with a 3-1 victory over Flathead (3-5-5) in the Class AA state soccer play-ins, ending the Braves’ season.

Spartans junior Dylan Farnes spushed Sentinel out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 11th and 47th minutes and Owen Winger scored a third in the 69th minute.

Flathead freshman Joey Russell helped prevent a shutout in the closing minutes by netting a penalty kick.

Fourth-seeded Sentinel (6-5-2) outshot the fifth-seeded Braves 8-6 in the game while the teams were even in corner kicks and cards. Flathead keeper Micah Bucy made three saves.

HELENA — Helena Capital scored a trio of second half goals to pull away from Flathead in a win in the Class AA state soccer play-ins.

The fourth-seeded Bruins (4-5-4) got on the board fast when Cassi Brisko scored in the seventh minute to give Capital a 1-0 lead that would hold until halftime.

Capital extended the lead in the second half with goals from Jasmin Waples, Jacey Baker amd Keyara McCarthy to take a 4-0 lead.

Flathead ended the shutout in the closing minutes on a goal from Lara Zander.

Capital outshot the Bravettes 11-9 and forced Flathead keeper Lilly Sherman into five saves.
