James Edward 'Hoot' Berta, 71
James Edward “Hoot” Berta, 71, of Columbia Falls was born Sept. 28, 1944.
Jim fought hard to stay with the ones he loved, but his body said “no more,” and his journey ended here on earth on Oct. 19, 2015.
He was raised on the family ranch and at the age of 17 received permission from his dad to join the Army. He enlisted July 1962. He served in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief and another seven years in the National Guard.
While serving in Vietnam he met his love of 50 years, Marie.
In 1965, Jim and Marie moved to Columbia Falls. Jim spent the majority of his life as a logger. Driving truck was what he loved to do. Later in life he purchased a semi and he and Marie drove over the road for several years until he retired.
He loved being surrounded by family and friends. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and tell stories … oh, the stories.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; children, Elizabeth and Greg Mutzenberger, Robert, and Denise Holm; and grandchildren, Ryan, Rylie, Ashton, KC, Montana and Hailie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Edith; son-in-law, Mackenzie “Mac” Holm; and numerous relatives and friends.
A graveside service with family is being planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Veterans Food Bank.
