Cross Country: Glacier's Hill sets state record, Vals win team title

GREAT FALLS — When you win the state championship as a freshman, it takes something special to turn heads the following year.

Now, after setting the state’s all-class record with a blistering three-mile time of 16 minutes and 30.71 seconds, Glacier’s Annie Hill might have to run next year’s race backwards to make headlines.

Hill won her second straight Class AA cross country championship and toppled a one-year-old state record held by Bigfork’s Makena Morley Saturday morning at Eagle Falls Golf Course, leading the way on an impressive day for runners from around the Valley.

“It’s the same thing I’ve seen all year,” Glacier coach Jacob Dietz said of Hill.

“She’s been on fire. We had talked about (setting the state record) and it’s a great accomplishment.”

Hill finished 17 seconds clear of the field and bested Morley’s mark by just over three seconds. The sophomore bolted out quickly, running the first mile 10 seconds faster than second-place finisher Christina Aragon of Billings Senior, and maintained her lead all the way to the finish line.

“My goal was 16:32,” Hill said. “I had time goals for the miles. I wanted to break the state record and run a smart race.”

Local runners picked up four individual championships on Saturday, sweeping the races in Class AA and Class B, and the Bigfork girls team won its first Class B title since the 1970s.

Joining Hill atop Class AA was Flathead senior Jake Perrin, who won his first state title with a course record and personal best time of 14:47.90. Perrin won one of the day’s closest races, finally pulling ahead of Helena’s Aidan Reed in the final 300 meters.

“I was sprinting as hard as I could,” Perrin said of the final stretch. “I thought I could hear people saying ‘he’s coming behind you’.

“My goal the whole year has been to be sub-15 (minutes),” he continued.

“To not get it until the state meet was a little nerve-wracking, but to get it at state was awesome. It’s just kind of setting in.”

Morley siblings won both Class B races for the second year in a row, but not the same two as in 2014.

Bryn Morley assumed the mantle atop the girls field following her sister Makena’s graduation, blowing away the rest of the field with a time of 17:26.15 to win my nearly 100 seconds.

Bigfork placed four girls in the top 13 to win the state championship, its first since winning three consecutive Class A titles from 2001-03. Freshman Anya Young came in third, Matty McAnally was eighth and another freshman, Alicia Kalenak, was 13th. The Valkyries’ 63 points put them atop the standings, one spot ahead of defending champion Manhattan (88 points).

“I was just really, really proud of the girls,” Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said.

“I would never have imagined that we were going to have four finish in the top 15. They were amazing. When I asked them to do something on the course, they did it.”

Logan Morley, Bryn and Maken’s brother, won his second straight Class B boys title in a time of 15:36.02 in the senior’s final high school race.

Whitefish senior Barrett Gray led area runners in Class A, finishing second to Hamilton’s Jaycie Schmalz in the girls race. Gray completed the course in 19:15.97 to pace the Bulldogs to a second place team finish.

The Eureka girls also landed on the podium, finishing third in Class B as a team. Tyann Totten (14th, 20:09.16) was Eureka’s top finisher.

Flathead’s boys and girls teams both finished in the top five, with Perrin pacing the Braves to a fourth place finish and Kaitlin Wride (sixth, 17:29.74) leading the Bravettes.

The crosstown rival Wolfpack was just behind in both races, with the girls claiming sixth and the boys fifth. Glacier senior Logan Harmon was seventh in the boys race in 15:30.98.

The state cross country meet comes to Kalispell next year for the first time, with all races held at Rebecca Farm.
