Missoula Sentinel scored three times in the first 28 minutes and cruised to a 4-0 win Tuesday night at Glacier in the season opener for both teams.

Emma Caldwell scored twice and Syd Steele tallied a goal and two assists for the Spartans, who return eight starters from a year ago and have a team that Wolfpack head coach Brenden Byrd called one of the best in the state.

“They’re a great team and we’re still trying to find a rhythm,” Byrd said.

Caldwell put the visitors on the board in the fourth minute on a pass from Steele, and the duo hooked up again in the 27th minute. Brittany Delridge, the co-Most Valuable Player of the Western AA a year ago, assisted on Piper Woodard’s 23rd minute goal. Steele provided the final tally, from Emma Hietala, in the 78th minute.

Byrd’s Glacier side not only suffered the defeat, they also lost four players to injury during the match. Keeper Amy Braig was knocked out of the contest after taking an elbow to her head and was being evaluated for a possible concussion. Cadie Williams, Erica Braig and Gabby Dickson all had to leave the match as well and did not return.

The Wolfpack will hope to get healthy in a hurry, with their annual showdown against crosstown rival Flathead looming at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Kidsports Complex.
