Butte Invitational golf: Keenan, Avery finish on top

BUTTE — Flathead’s Ryan Keenan and Glacier’s Teigan Avery closed strong during second-round play at Butte Country Club to earn medalist honors and boost their respective teams to second-place finishes on Friday at the Butte Invitational.

Keenan, who shot a first round 71 at Old Works Golf Club in Anaconda on Thursday, controlled the lead his entire round to close with a 1-under-par 69 on the final day, winning by six strokes over Butte’s Houston Green.

The Braves finished well as a team, jumping first-round leader Bozeman to finish in second place, 10 strokes behind Butte High.

Flathead’s Matt Marshall matched his first round score by posting a 77 to finish in a tie for 10th place with Glacier’s Tom Mann.

Mann shot a final round 74 to pull even with Marshall.

Glacier finished in fifth place as a team.

Avery continued her strong fall, shooting 12 strokes better than any other competitor in the second round to card a 72 and finish with a seven-shot victory over first-round leader Hannah Rosanova of Bozeman. Avery finished at 153 after a first round 81 at Old Works.

Led by Avery, the Glacier girls placed second as a team with 769, finishing well behind champion Bozeman, who was 76 strokes better than the field, placing all five golfers in the top 10.

Flathead finished sixth as a team.
