Soccer roundup: Five goals, 3 assists for Nicholson in Whitefish blow out

WHITEFISH — Haley Nicholson continues to pile up the offensive numbers for the Whitefish girls soccer team.

The junior forward scored five goals and assisted on three more as Whitefish blasted Livingston 9-1 in Class A nonconference play on Friday.

She now has 11 goals and seven assists on the season.

“She is taking her game to the next level,” Whitefish coach Roland Benedict said.

“She is starting to play at a collegiate level.”

Julia Houston had two goals for Whitefish (3-1 overall) while Audrey Hyatt and Mellisa Pollard and a goal apiece.

Benedict said sophomore defenders Lexie Carbo and Pixie Moore had been a force in the middle.

“They are forming a great bond in the heart of our defense,” he said.

Whitefish hosts Belgrade today at 10 .m.

HELENA — Flathead’s Sadie Wilson tied the Western AA match at 1-1 with her goal at 27 minutes, but Helena scored twice in the second half to claim the victory.

Helena dominated with 13 shots on goal to five for Flathead. Corner kicks also favored Helena, 10-1.

LAUREL — Columbia Falls picked up its second victory by beating Laurel in Class A nonconference play.

It marked the third game to open the fall campaign for the Wildkats, who have pitched a shutout each time.

Ashley Miller and Tavia Bechetele scored goals for Columbia Falls.

“Overall, played a good game,” Columbia Falls coach Greg Trenerry said.

“Give our keeper a lot of credit. Allyson Gimbel played a really good game, had some good saves.”

She had 20 for the match.

HELENA — Colton Becker had two first-half goals and scored another early in the second half as Glacier blanked Helena Capital in a Western AA matchup.

Brady Schultz had the other goal for the Wolfpack.

“(Becker) was phenomenal,” Glacier coach Ryan Billiet said.

“That gave us a lot of confidence. Things definitely started opening up for us in the second half. We played really well.”

Tyler Keller and Parker Bedard assisted on the second-half scores.

BIGFORK — Bigfork did not have enough players to field a full team, so no match was played. Bigfork has three players nursing injuries and three more have not met the 10-practice requirement to be eligible for play.

LAUREL — Columbia Falls picked up its first victory by beating Laurel in Class A nonconference play.

The Wildcats also scored for the first time this fall with Logan Stephens netting two goals and Auguste Emond the finale.

And ...

It was the first shutout of the season.

“If you look at the statistics, it was close,” Columbia Falls coach O’Brien Byrd said.

“(Goalie Brandon) Karberg and the defense kept us in the game.”

WHITEFISH — Livingston’s Stephen Newhouse scored in the 55th minute to unlock a tie and lift the Rangers to a win over Whitefish in a Class A nonconference matchup.

“It was a real close, well-played match,” Whitefish coach John Lacey said.

“We hit the post a few times. They capitalized on one of their best chances.”

Whitefish had eight shots on target to Livingston’s 10, but led with four corner kicks.

Whitefish hosts Belgrade today.

Hansen Eystad and BJ Bach each scored two goals to lead Stillwater to a victory over Foothills Christian at Stillwater Christian School.

The two Cougar goal scorers tallied each of their goals within five minutes of each other in the first and second halves to put the pressure on Foothills in the opener of the Cougar Classic.

Stillwater led in shots on goal 14-2 and corner kicks 14-2.

“(Eystad) is a sophomore this year and he’s beginning to develop a lot of composure in front of the goal,” Stillwater coach Ryan O’Rourke said.

“He’s making some nice shots for us.”

The Cougars will play today at 11:30 a.m. against Helena Christian.
