Golf: Avery, Keenan wire-to-wire winners at Kalispell Invitational

When it comes to the Kalispell Invitational golf tournament, Teigan Avery has been simply amazing.

The Glacier senior won the 2015 edition of this event with two solid rounds — a 2-under 70 on Thursday at Northern Pines Golf Club and a 1-under 73 on Friday at Buffalo Hill Golf Club for a 143 total and a 12-shot victory.

“I guess you could say that,” she said of blowing the field away.

“I just know Buffalo (Hill) gives good bounces and bad bounces. You just have to know where they are.”

Avery won this tournament a year ago, rallying from two-shots down on the final day to win by one stroke over Coral Schulz of Whitefish.

Schulz finished second again, shooting 75-80—155.

Whitefish’s Katie Fyall was third, 79-85—164.

This victory was the fourth straight in this event for Avery. She won it as a freshman and a sophomore when it was called the Flatfish Invitational.

“Both days (I shot) my average,” she said.

“I’m content with where I am at, putting two good back-to-back rounds together. I’m getting consistent.”

Flathead senior Ryan Keenan, though, was not completely satisfied with his scoring on the final day, carding a 3-over 75 for a nine-shot victory over Tom Mann of Glacier.

Keenan fired a 3-under 69 at Northern Pines the day before for a 144 total.

“I did not play well today,” he said.

“My bad was a little bit better than everyone else’s bad.”

Keenan said his ball striking was off, but he still managed to have the low round for a second-straight day despite “my misses.”

All in all, “today was a grind, a hard round,” he said.

“I had to work for everything.”

On the positive side ...

“It was nice to see I could play bad and still score well,” he said.

“That is a confidence booster.”

Like Avery, it was the second invitational win for Keenan in the last two weeks. They both won the Butte Invitational II last Friday.

Mann’s game also took a lift upwards at Buffalo Hill.

Tied for fourth with a 75 on Thursday, he came back with a 78 to finish as the runner-up at 153. His 78 was the third best score on the final day.

Nate Fuge of Missoula Sentinal also finished at 153.

“Decent,” Mann said of his final round.

“Putting,” he said of the one trouble spot.

“They were not dropping. The greens were a little suspect.”

This tournament, however, helped Mann heading into the final two meets of the season — the Crosstown Cup next week followed by state.

“Definitely improved my confidence,” he said.

“I’d like to work on my short game before state.”

Mann has won one tournament this fall and been in the top 10 for every one.”

“I’ve done reasonably well,” he said.

Mann and Keenan tied for third at this tournament last year. They finished nine shots behind the winner.

The Glacier girls, scoring 693, edged Whitefish for the team title by a single shot.

Missoula Sentinel was the boys team winner with a 625 score. Flathead was next at 638.
