LETTER: Professionals did great job fighting Bear Creek Fire

| September 19, 2015 9:00 PM

I own and operate a guest ranch in the Spotted Bear area. As many of you know, we have recently been in the heart of Montana’s biggest fire, the Bear Creek Fire.

I’ve heard a few folks suggesting that this fire could have been better managed if we had a well at the trailhead and if the general public could have helped. While I know many of us would love to have that water supply at the trailheads it would have made no difference in this matter. I’ve posted some photos and a video to the lodge Facebook page, Diamond R Guest Ranch LLC, and think it would be helpful for all interested parties to view these. They clearly show that no amount of water would have stopped this wall of fire.

As for citizen involvement I can state that the conditions were extremely hazardous. Even the most highly trained members of the fire crews could not stay in the area as the fire traveled through the trailheads.

I would like to commend the U.S. Forest Service staff at Spotted Bear along with all those who came from throughout the country to help. Our head ranger, Deb Mucklow, and her staff kept the outfitters well informed and encouraged our participation. Your good work has been very much appreciated. —Lisa Schreier Lee, Whitefish
