Glacier won the first Crosstown Cup golf outing on Friday, defeating Flathead in the final test of the regular season for both teams before next week’s Class AA state tournament in Helena at Bill Roberts Golf Course.

On Thursday, it was a boy/girl pairing with a scramble on the first nine and Chapman play on the back side.

On Friday, it was two-person match play, boys and girls, on the first nine and single-person match play on the second nine.

Play was held at Village Greens both days.

Glacier led 29 1/2-22 1/2 after Thursday’s session.

Day 2 had Glacier dominating 44-28.

The final tally was Glacier 73 1/2-50 1/2

“They had a blast,” Glacier coach Jim Schaible said.

“The kids were more focused than I’ve ever seen out there. They were cheering each other on, following groups.”

The top 15 boys and girls from both schools competed.

“The object was to get a lot of kids involved,” Schaible said.

“Also to give them an understanding of the game by playing the various formats — best ball, match play and Chapman.”

He said the boy/girl pairing “made it interesting. It generated a lot of excitement.

“A super team effort,” he added.

“This (format) really takes away the individual being the big winner.”

Flathead coach Jess Roper said “the parents loved it, the kids had fun. It got a lot of Flathead kids involved.”
