Alvin Leo Sylvest, 90

Alvin Leo Sylvest passed away on Aug. 2, 2016, at Brendan House in Kalispell. He was 90.

Alvin was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Columbia, Mississippi, the son of Alvin Leo Sylvest Sr. and Elizabeth Dyess Sylvest. He had two older sisters, Ann Carson and Marilee Wise.

He served in the Navy during World War II, and afterward graduated from the University of Mississippi. He was a geologist and cartographer.

Alvin met and married Mary Paxton Wood in Glendive in June of 1953 and later settled in Colorado, before returning to Montana after his retirement from the United States Geologic Survey.

He is survived by three daughters, Judy Marie Sylvest, Carol Joy Ewalt and Merry Allison Sylvest; and three granddaughters, Holly Marie Bitz and Melissa Joy Bitz, daughters of Judy, and Addie Bess Ewalt, daughter of Joy.

Alvin requested no public service and will be honored in a family ceremony.
