LAW ROUNDUP: Kayak found with no occupant

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an overturned kayak lodged up against rocks on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. No one was around it. A passer-by said one man was seen “very far downstream from the kayak walking in the opposite direction.” Deputies recovered the red kayak and noted the river flow was down and the depth where the kayak was located was shallow.

Deputies received a report from a Deer Park School administrator that youths climbed up the bell tower and broke some boards and noted that the youths could have fallen into the school building. The administrator told officers that children have been climbing up the bell tower for years to sign their names on it as some kind of “rite of passage.” He said the broken boards were a minor fix and that he didn’t want to pursue charges, but wanted it documented. Extra patrol was provided.

A woman told officers she received a suspicious phone call, which she believed was a scam, from a blocked number and was told “they kidnapped her daughter and wanted her to go to Albertsons to pay a $1,0000 ransom.” The woman confirmed her daughter was safe and would check with her cellphone provider to see if she could get the blocked number.

A Valley View Drive resident’s suspicions were raised when a young woman — who allegedly came to her door about a week ago trying to sell a camera — returned and this time said her boyfriend had bleeding ulcers and she needed a ride to get medication.

An allegedly intoxicated woman was reportedly driving recklessly in a black vehicle hooked to a trailer carrying two ATVs, causing the ATVs to roll off onto U.S. 2 in West Glacier.

A man’s ex-wife allegedly “pulled a knife” on him and was shoving him on Conn Road in Columbia Falls. The woman was reportedly intoxicated or on drugs. The husband reportedly had a cut on his hand, but refused medical attention.


Kalispell Police received a report that a man on East Idaho Street allegedly went to pawn a gun and when he was told they had to do a gun check and fill out a form, the man got upset and left without the gun.

An “extremely thin” husky found on Fifth Avenue East was taken to the shelter. It was reportedly the sixth time the dog has been to the shelter.

An older woman with a shopping cart was allegedly kicking her dog on First Street East and Woodland Avenue.

A male customer was threatening to beat someone up on First Avenue West.

A woman was suspicious that a “house may be used for something other than it should be” on Second Avenue East. The woman said the house “gives her a funny feeling,” because she doesn’t see anyone go in or out of the house and that roofers allegedly started working on the house but left and didn’t return.

Youths were heard running on the roof of a building on Fifth Avenue West North.

A man was reportedly punching walls and fighting other people and a bartender on First Avenue West.


The Whitefish Police Department received a report that a building was spray-painted on Baker Avenue.

A hotel employee thought it was curious when a guest checked out reportedly leaving a bucket, shovel, blanket and a Bible DVD in his room. Police contacted the man, who said the bucket and shovel were for gold prospecting and he did not want the items.

A man was upset that a transient allegedly camping on a bench on Central Avenue asked him for a cigarette.

People who attempted to steal $230 worth of items from a store on U.S. 93 South did not get very far when the items were allegedly taken back when they couldn’t produce a receipt.

A man on Wisconsin Avenue thought he heard a bear snort outside his window.


The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report from BNSF Railway that about five gallons of coolant concentrate allegedly leaked onto a concrete floor in the West Wolf CR Railroad Tunnel.
