GLENDIVE — Three Glacier Twins are heading east to continue their baseball careers, committing to play for the Dawson Community College Buccaneers, the school announced Monday.

Twins products Tyler Murphy, A.J. Wetsch and Colten Parker will play for first-year coach Chris Lewis this spring.

Murphy was Glacier’s best pitcher as the team advanced to the championship game of the Montana/Alberta State A tournament earlier this summer. He went 4-2 with a team-leading 2.15 ERA, allowing only 52 hits in 83 2/3 innings. When he wasn’t on the mound, Murphy was the Twins’ primary catcher and batted .353 with 38 RBIs.

Wetsch was the tournament’s most valuable player when the Twins won the state tourney in 2014 and rounded out his career with a fine season in 2016. The right-hander matched Murphy with four wins and struck out 55 in 61 innings. Wetsch, too, was a dangerous two-way player, batting .376 with 18 extra-base hits.

Parker played in 57 games this spring, batting .377 with 14 doubles, two triples, 23 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. He struck out only 18 times in 213 plate appearances.

The Buccaneers went 26-20 last season.

Petrino added to Lady Griz staff

MISSOULA — Flathead grad Mike Petrino will join the Montana women’s basketball program as an assistant coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Petrino, who was born in Glasgow but grew up in Kalispell, joins new head coach Shannon Schweyen’s staff after a year in the Pac-12 at Colorado. Prior to that, Petrino spent four years as an assistant coach at Wyoming.

Petrino is the brother of Rocky Mountain College head football coach Jason Petrino and the cousin of Division I football coaches Bobby (Louisville) and Paul (Idaho) Petrino.

Parents of Glacier athletes in fall sports are required to attend a meeting Thursday in the high school’s performance hall at 6 p.m.
