For the second straight game, the Glacier girls found an edge with their suffocating pressure defense, pulling away from Class A Frenchtown early in a 46-24 nonconference basketball win on Friday.

The Glacier girls started the game on a 13-1 run, holding the visiting Broncs without a field goal until the closing seconds of the first quarter, when Frenchtown junior Alli Hochhalter sunk a turnaround jumpshot after being fooled by a fake shot clock countdown from the Glacier student section. The Wolfpack led 13-3 after the first quarter and only expanded its lead as the game wore on.

Glacier led 21-3 midway through the second quarter, forcing nine turnovers in the first 12 minutes of play.

Frenchtown closed the margin to 21-7 at half, but was down 19 again three minutes into the second half. Glacier led by a hefty margin for the rest of the contest, finishing with a flourish when reserve guard Madison Rauthe combined with Kali Gulick for a give-and-go with 15 seconds to play to give the Wolfpack a 22-point victory.

Glacier senior guard Hailee Bennett filled out the stat sheet, finishing with 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Taylor Salonen had six points, four steals and a game-high eight rebounds and Nikki Krueger had eight points and a pair of blocks for the Wolfpack.

“It was a great team effort,” Glacier coach Kris Salonen said. “Hailey had a great offensive game again, but what a great team effort for the girls tonight.”

Emilie Hinrichs led Frenchtown with seven points and Kylie Willett had five points and eight rebounds.

“They’re really running their offense and executing,” Salonen said. “We knew we were going to have to be a little bit more aggressive defensively in order to have an opportunity to get the ball.”

Glacier forced 19 turnovers in the contest, including 13 steals. The Wolfpack also outrebounded Frenchtown 32-26 and held the Broncs to 20 percent shooting for the game.

“Tonight was about working on and executing things we worked on all week,” Salonen said.

“We have a tendency to force things, I thought we did a better job.”

The Wolfpack finishes its nonconference slate next week with a home game against Polson on Tuesday and a road trip to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to play Lake City on Saturday. Glacier (5-3) is 4-2 in nonconference play this season, going 1-1 against the Northwest A and losing in its only trip to Idaho.
