WRESTLING: Flathead's Trae Vasquez wins title at Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Invitational
MISSOULA — Trae Vasquez of Flathead was the individual champion at 120 pounds on Saturday, decisioning Nick Kunz of Helena Capital 8-5 in the finals at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic.
Vasquez, who finished third here last year at 113, went 5-0 in the two-day wrestling event.
He moved on to the final with an 8-0 major decision over Wyatt Gordon of Missoula Big Sky earlier in the day in the semifinals.
Vasquez is undefeated to date and is a defending Class AA state champion.
Payton Hume was Flathead’s other finalist. He dropped a 4-0 decision to Chance Karst of Powell in the 138 title round.
Flathead’s Logan Wilson (182) placed fourth.
Havre captured the team title with a 193 score. Missoula Sentinel, 165, was second.
Flathead, 123, finished seventh, Polson, 94, was 14th, Columbia Falls, 68, was 18th, Glacier, 34 1/2, was 25th and Libby, 25, was 27th.
Polson had three wrestlers finish fourth — R.J. Pierre (103), Cameron Brown (132) and Mike Corrigan (205).
Belgrade’s Jarrett Degen (145) was named most outstanding wrestler.
