MISSOULA — The Montana High School Association has rejected a proposal by Missoula's Hellgate high school that sought an option for its seniors if Hellgate was unable to field a football team in the fall.

Hellgate had sought approval for its seniors to play football at either Big Sky or Sentinel while still attending classes at Hellgate. The MHSA denied the request on Saturday during its meeting in Billings.

The Knights have a 33-game losing streak dating back to October 2012, including two forfeits last fall because it could not field a team.

Principal Lisa Hendrix said the school hopes to hire a new football coach by the end of January. She said it will be up to the new coach to decide if there are enough players to field both varsity and junior varsity teams next fall.
