WRESTLING: Columbia Falls sweeps host triangular

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls quickly dispatched a pair of Northwest A conference foes, sweeping its host wrestling triangular on Tuesday against Whitefish and Frenchtown.

The Mat Cats scored five pins and a decision in a 57-12 win over Whitefish, dropping just two matches. Austin Nelson, at 113 pounds, Winfield West (126), Colton Sweeney (152) and Troy Meyer (160) all won by pin in the first period for the Cats and Kaleb Gravelin won by pin in 3:02 at 138 pounds. Storm Kemppainen won the longest match of the dual, earning a 7-2 decision over Konrad Zinke at 170 pounds. Columbia Falls won four other classes by forfeit.

Triston Knopp (182) and Steven Quimby (285) each earned first period pins for Whitefish in the dual.

Against Frenchtown, Columbia Falls only dropped one decision, in addition to losing an open weight at 103 to beat the Broncs 60-9.

Nelson, West, Colton McPhee (160) and Kemppainen all recorded first-round pins and Sweeney and Miguel Garate earned decisions for the Mat Cats.

Whitefish also beat Frenchtown at the triangular, edging the Broncs despite dropping five open weights. Zinke earned a second round pin at 170 punds and Taisuke Matsuo won by major decision at 113 pounds to lead the Bulldogs.

LIBBY — Libby split a pair of duals at its host invite, topping Western B opponent Bigfork and falling to Thompson Falls.

Laine Young, at 138 pounds and Tim Carvey, at 152, earned first round pins for the Greenchain. Dylan Parrish won an 11-2 major decision at 170 pounds to help the Libby cause. Libby also won three open classes in the 34-24 dual win.

Bigfork got pins from Conner Meyer at 132 pounds and Castor Conley at 120 pounds in the loss.

Buddy Doolin earned a pin at 103 pounds against Thompson Falls and Young and Tanner Wood each won their matches, but it wasn’t enough to ground the Blue Hawks in a 42-13 dual loss.

Thompson Falls recorded four pins in the dual.
