BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Polson boys pull away from Whitefish

WHITEFISH — Polson outscored Whitefish 25-6 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 57-38 Northwest A boys basketball victory on Saturday evening.

Polson and Whitefish were deadlocked at 32-all after three quarters.

Matthew Rensvold led Polson in scoring with 18 points. Wyatt Ducharme tallied 14 points and Peyton Lefthand added 10.

Derek Kastella had 15 points for Whitefish.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Nathan Riley was back in form, scoring 19 points, and Mason Tucker came off the bench to provide some good interior minutes as Columbia Falls defeated Stevensville in a Class A nonconference outing.

Columbia Falls outscored Stevensville 19-13 in the final quarter to pull out the win.

Riley, who has been nursing an ankle injury, led all scorers with 19 points. Tucker added nine.

Bryce Torrey had 11 and Dalton Bragg 10 for Stevensville.

Jonny Cielak tallied 15 points for the Loggers.

EUREKA — Bigfork never left a doubt, leading 37-10 at half in a District 7B rout.

George Gibson scored 20 points and Joseph Potkonjak had 15 as the Vikings got out to a 15-2 start in the first quarter. The lead only increased from there, as Bigfork scored 22 points in the second quarter and lifted its lead to 52-21 after the third quarter before winning by 40.

Jamie Good led Eureka with nine points.

COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho — Glacier got off to a great start and pushed its lead out to nearly 20 in a rout of Lake City in the Wolfpack’s final nonconference game of the season.

Hailee Bennett had 18 points and Taylor Salonen had 12 and a game-high seven rebounds and three assists for Glacier, which got out to a 12-3 lead after the first quarter.

The Wolfpack would build its lead to 19 points midway through the third before easing to the finish.

Glacier lost the rebounding battle, but made up for it with a tight pressure defense that forced 14 steals and 21 total turnovers.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Stevensville could muster just two points on 1 of 17 shooting in the first half and turned it over 21 times as Columbia Falls cruised to an easy Class A nonconference win.

Columbia Falls led 25-2 at intermission.

Kiara Burlage had 17 points and Allyson Gimbel 14 for Columbia Falls. Burlage also had a team-high eight rebounds.

Cydney Finberg added nine points for the Wildkats.

WHITEFISH — Haley Nicholson had a pair of steals in the final 20 seconds and hit a pair of free throws to lift Whitefish over Polson for its first conference win of the season.

Polson scored a go-ahead basket with 46 seconds to play, its first points in more than three minutes, to take a 31-30 lead on the Bulldogs but Nicholson’s heroics altered the game. The junior guard secured a late steal and got the ball off to Coral Schulz, who converted a free throw to tie the game with 11 remaining. After a quick Polson timeout, Nicholson got another steal on the inbounds pass, this time hitting a pair of free throws to give Whitefish a two-point lead.

Nicholson’s only other points, a 3-pointer with four minutes to play, tied the game at 29-29.

Cailyn Ross scored 10 points to lead Whitefish.

Nichole Lake had nine points to lead Polson, which led by five points entering the fourth quarter, but only scored two points in the final eight minutes.

BIGFORK — Lana Berg scored 12 of her 20 points in the second half to help Bigfork pull away from Eureka and stay perfect in District 7B conference play.

The Valkyries led by just six points at the half as Eureka was able to keep the game to a low-scoring affair.

Bigfork scored 16 points in the third quarter to take an 18-point lead by the end of the frame, and added to the lead in the fourth quarter.

Berg finished with 10 rebounds to complete the double-double and Miranda Campbell had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Vals.

Sienna Utter had a team-high eight points for Eureka.

HELENA — Lexi Ehlers scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the opening quarter as Flathead Valley Homeschool whipped Helena Christian in Montana Christian Athletic Association conference play on Friday.

The victory was the fifth straight for FVHS (11-4 overall, 3-0 Western Conference).

Karissa Williams scored 10 of FVHS’s 12 points in the second quarter for a 32-14 halftime lead. She finished with 14 points.
