Popp, Clason pace Glacier swimmers at Missoula Invite

MISSOULA — Swimmers from Flathead and Glacier continue to prep for the upcoming state meet next month by posting best times at the Missoula Invitational on Saturday.

Glacier freshman AJ Popp led the way by winning the 200 freestyle (1:59.21) and placing second in the 100 freestyle (55.21).

She broke her own school records in both events.

Anthony Clason was second in the 100 breast (1:04.55) with a season-best time for Glacier.

“This was another meet to decide on the state team,” Flathead/Glacier swim coach Dave Lillard said.

“They had to meet some state times to keep going. A lot of swimmers did that.”

The final meet of the regular season for area swimmers is Saturday at the Great Falls Invitational. The state meet is Feb. 12-13, also in Great Falls.

For Glacier on Saturday, Thomas Tracey improved by 32 seconds in the 200 free.

Tessa Howe and Lauryn Vornbrock had best times in the 200 free.

Alicia Bernhardt had best times in the 100 back and 200 IM, while John Putnam dropped 11 seconds in the 200 IM.

Oliva Gibson, Malea Bauer and Lauren Mills all had best times in the 50 free, along with John deHoop, Keegan Mackenstadt and James Ditman. Gibson finished third (25.53) in the 50 free and was also third in the 500 free (5:37.17).

Carley Denton and Vornbrock had best times in the 100 back, same for Emma Hornby and Mackenstadt in the 100 breast.

For Flathead, best times were by Madison Edwards, Roxy Ward, Dani Skonord and Darby Mackenstadt in the 200 free, Greta Cole and Josh Gruber in the 200 IM, Shayenn Thompson, Carter Warnell, Brandon Pyron and Blaine Normandeau in the 50 free, Normandeau and Nathan Moon in the 100 free, Luke Ferron and Ethan Timm in the 500 free, Maddie Huestis in the 100 back and Kendra Wilke and Skonord in the 100 breast.

Zayne Friar of Columbia Falls was third in the 100 freestyle (53.45).
