FRIDAY BRIEFS: Black & Blue end season Saturday; Whitefish's Park headed to Montana-Western

The Kalispell Black and Blue rugby club plays its last home game of the season at 2 p.m. today at Evergreen Junior High School, facing off against the Frenchtown Iron Horse.

The Black and Blue (5-0) hold the top seed in the state and can clinch the top spot at the state tournament with a win. The state tournament begins next weekend in Missoula.

Park signs with Western

DILLON — Whitefish senior Chris Park has signed to play football this fall at the University of Montana-Western. Park, an all-state running back for the Class A state champion Bulldogs, was the Northwestern A conference offensive and defensive player of the year. He ran for 1,129 yards in his senior campaign, averaging more than 10 yards a carry.

Bozeman wins AA Cup

Bozeman High School won the inaugural AA Cup, a trophy awarded to the top athletic program in Class AA.

Class AA activity directors and principals voted to award a trophy, to the school that receives the most points for all athletic and speech state placings. The winning school in each sport receives 14 points, second receives 13, third receives 12, down to 14th place which is 1 point. The standings provide a snapshot of how programs are doing relative to others.

Bozeman won an amazing eight state championships with 226.5 points. The Hawks outdistanced second place Billings Senior who scored 184.5 points. Third place went to Missoula Sentinel with 173 points.

The award will be presented to Bozeman administration at the annual Class AA summer meeting in Billings in June. Bozeman will house the trophy for the 2016-17 school year. Results will be tabulated following next year’s last state events in track and softball.

Cat-Dog Smoker on Monday

WHITEFISH — The 2016 Glacier Twins Cat-Dog Boxing Smoker will be held on June 6, with the first bout scheduled at 7 p.m. at Memorial Park in Whitefish.

The event is sponsored by the Glacier Twins American Legion Baseball Organization in coordination with Hill Brothers Auto Body and Towing, who have arranged the bouts and conducted training of the fighters.

This is a major annual fundraiser for the Twins with ticket prices at $25 for ringside seating and $10 for general admission. There is advance sale of ringside seating only at $20 through any Twins official or at Hill Brothers Auto Body and Towing. No general admission tickets are available in advance.

SBG Team Medals at Inland Empire Judo Classic

SPOKANE — Straight Blast Gym of Montana in Kalispell had a four athletes finish third at the Inland Empire Judo Classic.

Colton Wieczorek picked up bronze in the 13-14-year-old lightweight boys division, Stella Davison third in the 13-14 lightweight girls, Ryan Asay third in men’s middleweight brown and black belts and Keith Treece third in masters lightweight brown and black belts.

Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship begins today

TUMWATER, Wash. — The best young golfers in the region are readying their games for the 2016 Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship, which will be contested on June 4-5 at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington.

Open to golfers younger than 18 the champions of both the boys’ and girls’ division of the Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship qualify to join approximately 150 of the nation’s top junior golfers in the PGA of America’s flagship junior event, the 41st Junior PGA Championship presented by Under Armour and Genesis Networks, Aug. 9-12, at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Rhode Island.

Libby’s Ryggs Johnston finished third at last year’s competition and Flathead’s Ryan Keenan was tied for 33rd. Whitefish’s Coral Schulz tied for 13th in the girls division.

The Junior PGA Championship has traditionally been a stepping-stone for many of today’s PGA and LPGA Tour professionals, as well as current collegiate stars. Past Junior PGA Championship competitors who have gone on to successful professional careers on tour include: Inbee Park, Luke Guthrie, Trevor Immelman, Cristie Kerr, Justin Leonard, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Grace Park, Dottie Pepper, Jordan Spieth, Lexi Thompson, David Toms, Michelle Wie and Tiger Woods.

Huff hits hole-in-one at Buffalo Hill

Scott Huff used a 9-iron to hit a hole-in-one on the 107-yard 12th hole at the Championship 18 course at Buffalo Hill Golf Club on Monday. It is the third hole-in-one for Huff and the seventh at Buffalo Hill this season. The shot was witnessed by Dennis Redpath and Tom Sullivan.

Trio of aces at Whitefish Lake

WHITEFISH — Three golfers have hit holes-in-one at Whitefish Lake Golf Club in the last week, all in a short span on the North Course.

On May 25, Steve Boone used a 7-iron on the 167-yard fourth hole to card his ace. Veen Kisor, Jim Fuller, Jim San Fellipo were witnesses.

On Saturday, Chrissy Mills kicked off the holiday weekend with a hole-in-one on hole No. 6, using a 7-iron to ace the 110-yard par 3. Her witnesses were Nicole and Noah James.

Robert Marcuvitz hits the third hole-in-one of his career and the third of the weekend, acing the fourth hole with a 1951 McGregor 6-wood.

Seven earn Buffalo Hill junior achievement awards

The Kalispell Golf Association selected seven junior golfers for junior achievement awards, the winner of each receiving a 2016 season golf pass at Buffalo Hill Golf Club and a season driving range pass through the Alice Ritzman Junior Golf Foundation.

Buffalo Hill junior club champions Andrew ‘AJ’ Grande, a sophomore at Glacier High School, and McKenna Tinseth, a junior at Glacier, lead the list. Also receiving awards were Flathead freshman Dylan Fisher, Glacier sophomore Jon Sorenson, Kalispell Middle School seventh grader Ezra Epperly, St. Matthew’s seventh grader Sam Manaker and Edgerton School second grader Tyler Walter.

Award winners were judged on scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership and special accomplishments.

Junior golf camp scheduled at Buffalo Hill

A junior golf camp for boys and girls ages 6-17 will be held on five days from June 14-23 at Buffalo Hill Golf Club.

The camps, instructed by PGA professionals Dave Broeder and Marlin Hanson, will focus on rules, etiquette, putting, chipping and full swing. Cost of the camp is $30 and includes instruction, a tee prize, barbecue and contest awards.

The first four days of the camp will be held June 14, 15, 16 and 21, with golfers ages 12-17 teeing off from 9-10 a.m. and ages 6-11 from 10-11 a.m. All juniors will compete in contests beginning at 9 a.m. on June 23, the final day of the camp, with a barbecue and awards to follow. Equipment will be provided at no cost, but juniors with their own clubs are urged to bring them.
