Krause, Crippen lead at 4th of July golf tournament
WHITEFISH — Sam Krause felt right at home on the North Course at Whitefish Lake Golf Club, carding the low round on the opening day of the 80th annual Fourth of July golf tournament on Thursday.
Krause, the 2006 Class A individual state champion for Whitefish now living in La Quinta, California, shot a 5-under-par 67 to take a three-stroke lead into the second round. Whitefish’s Mark Mance and Kalispell’s Ryan Porch are tied for second place at 2-under.
With nine golfers at par or better, and 16 more within two shots of even, there is still a crowded field at the top.
Whitefish’s Carroll Lilly leads the men’s senior competition by three strokes, carding a 1-under 71.
Missoula’s Maggie Crippen has a commanding lead in the women’s tournament, carding a 3-under-par 68 on the South Course to take a four stroke lead on younger sister Sadie. Maggie, a senior at North Dakota State and three-time Class B state champion at Loyola-Sacred Heart, was the only golfer to play below par in the first round.
Sadie Crippen, who just finished her freshman season at the University of Montana, is in second place at 1-over-par 72 and Bozeman’s Haylee Folkvord, a recently graduated Bobcat, is in third at 2-over.
