TRACK: Flathead's Perrin breaks all-class state record
MISSOULA — Opening day at the Class AA state boys and girls track meet turned out to be a record-setting event for runners from Flathead, Helena High and Billings Senior on Friday at Missoula County Stadium.
Flathead senior Jake Perrin broke the 1,600 all-class record held by former Braves standout David Vidal (2001) with a time of 4:12.06. The old mark was 4:13.29.
Billings Senior’s Christina Aragon established two new all-class records, winning the 800 in 2:05.65 and the 3,200 in 10:23.31.
Her 800 time is the fastest in the nation this season. Runner-up Carly Smiedala of Helena High ran the ninth fastest time in the country, finishing in 2:08.52.
Glacier sophomore Annie Hill was second in the 3,200 (10:44.36) and third in the 800 (2:09.32).
Danielle Aragon of Billings Senior held the old 800 mark of 2:03.31, set in 2012, and Flathead’s Zoe Nelson had the old standard in the 3,200 with a time of 10:26.18 set in 2004.
Helena High’s Connor Matthews was the other record setter, turning in a 47.75 time in the 400 to break the all-class mark of 48.16 held by Brad Knapp of Billings Senior, set in 1988.
Brynn McChesney of Glacier tied Abby Dodge of Butte in the long jump. Both had a winning distance of 17-5 1/2.
The Glacier 400 relay team of Drew Turner, Ethan Larson, Scout Willcut and Aaron Robinson were clocked in 41.96 to win that event.
On the team front, Flathead’s boys are fifth (21 points) and Glacier is sixth (14).
Billings West tops the field with 46.
Glacier’s girls (31) are fifth and Flathead is 14th (1).
Missoula Sentinel tops the field with 46. Helena High is three back.
The state meet ends today.

MISSOULA — Kelly Murnion of Jordan turned in a 48.64 time in the 400 to break the Class C state record of 48.69 held by Todd Riech of Hot Springs set in 1989 during the first day of competition at Missoula County Stadium.
Former Polson star Bree Fuqua had her all-class record in the discus eclipsed by Leah Thompson of Plains with her toss of 154-11. That bettered Fuqua’s mark by one inch.

Barrett Gray of Whitefish was timed in 11:54.56 in the 3,200 and Allyson Gimbel put the shot 39-7.
On the team front, Dillon holds a slim edge on Corvallis in the boys field. Hamilton and Corvallis are 1-2, respectively, on the girls side.

BOZEMAN — Logan Morley of Bigfork posted an easy victory in the 1,600, crossing the finish line in 4:18.16 on the first day of competition at the state meet.
He finished 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Kim Parsell of Shelby rule the track, winning the 400 (58.8), 800 (2:14.26) and 3,200 (11:35.16).
