LETTER: Bush was joined by Democrats in WMD concerns

| November 6, 2016 8:00 AM

A recent writer said that Congress was lied to by President Bush that Iraq had WMDs (and therefore the Senate voted for the Iraq invasion).

Once I read that sentence, I realized the writer had no facts about the WMD (weapons of mass destruction) issue and I stopped reading the remainder of the letter. The Clinton administration acknowledged publicly that Iraq had WMDs. President Clinton during a Pentagon briefing in 1998 warned that if Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program.

In the early 2000s, then-Sen. Hillary Clinton said that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons.   Now here we are in 2016, and this writer somehow forgot that President Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry and Mrs. Clinton all acknowledged that Iraq had WMDs, but somehow President Bush lied about it. —Jack Sollars, Kalispell
