LETTER: 'Three Simple Rules' to live by

| November 22, 2016 6:50 PM

The pastor of my church tells us to believe what Rueben P. Job wrote in his book “Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living.” Rule 1 is “Do No Harm.” Rule 2 is “Do Good.” Rule 3 is “Stay in Love with God.” I have found myself relying on these rules as I try to deal with my frustration and anger over the words and actions of people during these past months. These rules help me dismiss suspicions, doubts, and hopelessness as I look to our future.

I believe in the goodness found in all persons. “Do No Harm” has kept me from striking out at others with whom I disagree. “Do Good” gives me a goal for my actions. “Stay in Love with God” quiets my soul when I am troubled.

My beliefs with the support of my faith family give me confidence that individuals, communities, the state and our nation can rise above recent actions. We can treat each other with respect, care for each other’s needs, welcome each other as friend, and walk with each other in times of struggle. —Debbie Sapp, Kalispell
