'Wild Impressions,' featuring Wanda Mumm, opens April 27

The Hockaday Museum of Art will host “Wild Impressions,” a new exhibition featuring painter Wanda Mumm’s pieces created during her participation in the 2016 Artist Wilderness Connection Program.

The show will kick off with an opening reception April 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. and will remain on exhibit through June 24, with an opening reception. Admission to the opening reception is free for members at $10 for nonmembers.

Mumm is a longtime Eureka artist who works in oil and pastel and enjoys capturing Montana’s beauty in landscapes painted en plein air. Mumm concentrates on light, painting scenes from early morning to late afternoon, as well as nocturne scenes. The exhibit explores her artistic and creative process through paintings, sketchbooks and journals that capture her experience in the wilderness.

Mumm spent 10 days in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex as part of her involvement with the Artist Wilderness Connection program offered by the Flathead National Forest, Hockaday Museum of Art, Swan Ecosystem Center and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation. Participating artists benefit from having a remote setting to focus on their art, and the community benefits from the presentations the artists offer from their experience. Mumm will offer a workshop for artists ages 15 and up at the Hockaday, May 5-6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. She will help attendees analyze their work and improve their technique. The cost of the two-session workshop is $67.70 for museum members and $75 for non-members.

The Hockaday Museum of Art is located in the cultural district of downtown Kalispell at 302 Second Ave E. It is housed in a 1904 Carnegie Library building that appears on the National Register of Historic Places.
