Lawrence E. Sutherland Jr., 90
Larry was born Dec. 14, 1926, to Lawrence and Dorothy Schurr Sutherland in Anaheim, California.
He had one sister, Dorothy Throop, now deceased.
In 1946 he married his high school sweetheart, Delia Pompa Sutherland, now residing in Huntington Beach, California. They had six children together, Lee Sutherland and his five sisters, Joye Atchison and Linda Cahill, Debra Seymour, all in Orange County, California, Laurie Blossom Savage in Missoula, and Jeanie Funke (deceased).
His childhood and early years were spent living in Pasadena, California. There he attended elementary, junior high, high school, Occidental College and University of California, Los Angeles — UCLA. His summers were spent at the family beach house in Anaheim Landing Bay in Seal Beach, California.
He enlisted in the ROTC program in the Navy February 1944, commissioned 1947; promoted to commander, 1961. There he served as supply officer on six ships in the Pacific theater; two Destroyers, Destroyer Tender, Ice Breaker, Assault Troopship, Aircraft Carrier, and four shore stations. He retired in 1968. His second 20-year career was as a manager, financial and support services with Tustin School District from 1968-88.
He and Delia divorced in 1975 and he moved from Westminster, California, to Tustin, California. In 1988, he married Marlene Gorski and resided there until their divorce in 1999. From 1989 to 2016, he spent every spring, summer and fall living at Eagle Bend Golf Club in Bigfork, enjoying golf, virtually playing daily,(weather permitting). He married Camille Huynh Sutherland in 2000 and enjoyed their short time together immensely. She passed on in February 2008. She has a beautiful family, Carolyn, her daughter, and Douglas and their three boys. The youngest, Brandon, was learning how to golf on their vacations in Montana.
Dad loved gardening at Eagle Bend and he has his special holes which he helped landscape with beautiful flowers. His own garden was bright colors and tons of humming birds feeding at his bird feeder. He delighted in watching the deer and the wild turkeys and birds out his windows. He was also good at critiquing the other golfers as they came by!
He died on March 14, 2017, in Tustin. He fell playing tennis and never recovered. He will always be loved and missed by his children, 12 grandchildren, and many greats- and great-greats! May he be remembered as he was — a father with unconditional love and enduring positive support for his family throughout his long life.
