'Uncommon Threads: A Weaving of Art and Community'

| August 17, 2017 1:12 PM

The Bigfork Art and Cultural Center presents “Uncommon Threads: A Weaving of Art and Community,” on exhibit from Aug. 25 to Sept. 22.

The opening reception for the show will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, with artist introductions at 5:45 p.m.

“Uncommon Threads” is a celebration of the fiber arts, featuring crochet, knitting, needlepoint, weaving, embroidery, felting, quilting, and many other fiber forms. Featured artists include Annie Allen, Melissa Arnold, Louise Barker, Sally Glutting, Jill Gotschalk, Susan Hanson, Ruth Lane, Robin Magaddino, Claudia Paillao, Debra Pollard, Julie Wulf, and others.

The exhibit will also feature BACC’s second community collaborative artwork, a 3-D Montana landscape featuring a myriad of fiber art forms in the spirit of last year’s popular “Wooly Garden.”

BACC is seeking contributions and loans of crochet, knitting and other fiber forms, to be incorporated into a fiber soft sculpture artwork that will be the centerpiece for the exhibition. Contributions are being accepted through Aug. 22 in order to incorporate as many pieces as possible into the collaborative artwork.

The individual pieces will be assembled together and affixed to a cloth backing to form the 3-D landscape. The soft sculpture will flow down a wall and onto the floor, which will feature a streambed, flora and fauna. Trees and deer will be placed alongside. For more information as to how to contribute, visit http://bigforkculture.org.

The artwork is being assembled by an artist team that includes Annie Allen, Jill Gottschalk, Sue Hanson, Robin Magaddino, and Betty Violette —the team responsible for last year’s first collaborative artwork, “Woolly Garden.” Contributors to this year’s project range from Aces students, BACC visitors, area residents, members of the Alpine Weaver’s Guild, and contributors from across the state.

The BACC is located at 525 Electric Ave., Bigfork. For more information, call 406-837-6927 or visit http://bigforkculture.org.
