HELENA — Moving day went the wrong direction for all but two golfers on the second day of play at the Montana State Mid-Amateur golf tournament on Friday at Green Meadow Country Club.

Only two golfers shot under par on a hot, dry day that saw wind speeds reach higher than 18 mph at the course.

Helena’s Brady Kirkeby made five pars on the back nine to close his round at 2-under-par 69, moving into a tie for first place with first-round leader Parker Heller of Helena, who played even par to hold onto the lead entering the final round.

Great Falls’ Ross Bartell had the best round of the day by far, firing a 4-under round of 67 to move into third place, the only other golfer below par after the second day.

Libby’s Joe Cielak is in fourth, finishing his round at 2-over 73 despite playing his final seven holes 3-over-par. He’s at 1-over for the tournament, tied with Whitefish’s Mark Mance, who had an up-and-down round that saw five birdies, four bogeys and a double, playing his final three holes 4-over-par.

Whitefish’s Brad Grattan, who entered the day in second place, shot 6-over in the second round and fell to a tie for eighth place seven strokes out of the lead.
