Libby, Whitefish top 2 at Tipoff

FRENCHTOWN — Northwestern A teams captured the top two places in the Tipoff Tournament versus Southwestern A schools on Saturday.

Libby finished the two-day event with a 5-0-1 record. Whitefish was next at 5-0-2.

Southwestern A’s Corvallis, 4-1-2, and Dillon, 4-2-1, finished at third and fourth, respectively.

On Saturday, Whitefish beat Frenchtown and Butte Central in pool play and Hamilton in a matchup of pool runner-ups.

“I’m really happy with the way we came out and played,” Whitefish coach Jackie Fuller said.

“Everybody stepped up at different points of each game. And everyone got an opportunity to play. That creates better opportunities for us later.”

Whitefish kicks off Northwestern A play Friday hosting Libby.

GREAT FALLS — Glacier opened Class AA volleyball action with a pair of nonconference victories.

The Wolfpack, down two sets, rallied to take the final three in topping Great Falls High.

Glacier also battled back against CMR, winning the final three to claim the win.

Kali Gulick was Glacier’s kill and block leader in both matches. She had 17 kills and five blocks against Great Falls and 13 kills and nine blocks versus CMR.

Glacier continues with nonleague play, facing Post Falls and Lakeland on Thursday in Post Falls, Idaho.

GREAT FALLS — Flathead settled for split to open the season with nonconference action.

The Bravettes rolled past C.M. Russell, but came up short with Great Falls High.

Julia Burden had 12 of Flathead’s 23 kills in the victory.

Madde Boles totaled 11 of Flathead’s 34 kills in the setback.

Flathead is off until Sept. 7 when it plays Billings Senior in Great Falls.
