Stumptown Art Studio opens group exhibition

Whitefish’s nonprofit Stumptown Art Studio’s new group exhibition, “Wildflowers: Variations on a Theme,” is now open and will run through July 2.
The show features a number of local artists who have expressed “wildflowers” in creative and unique ways.
Along with the show, “Montana Native Plants” poster artist Nancy Seiler is hosting a series of related workshops. The first one, “Nature Journaling: Native Plants” is June 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Center for Native Plants in Whitefish. Seiler also has classes scheduled for July 24 (drawing butterflies) and Aug. 28 (landscapes in the nature journaling format).
THE STUDIO’S summer art classes have also returned.
Watercolor painter Kim Shirley will host “Art Treks,” guided outdoor watercolor sessions at the City Beach pavilion, July 12, 26 and Aug. 9.
Glass fusing courses are scheduled monthly, with a class on pendants July 12 and candle-bent stringer designs Aug. 9.
Guest artist Malinda Goldhirsch returns this summer to teach two of her precious metal clay introductory workshops, one on July 20 and one on Aug.. 17. Precious metal clay is a clay-like material which is molded, stamped and textured, then fired with a butane torch and transformed into a 99 percent silver piece of jewelry.
Another returning guest artist, Dennis Johnson, and his wife, Joan Black, are teaching an unusual monotype workshop. Images are made using a variety of materials pressed into an inked plate to create texture and/or color. The image on the plate is then transferred to paper by hand or a printing process. This class is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24.
The studio’s year-long classes will also keep going during the summer months, with Canvas and Cocktails scheduled June 23, July 14 and Aug. 4; Wild Women Wednesdays June 21, July 19 and Aug. 9; and the Cultural Art and History Club July 11 and Aug. 8.
FOUNDED IN 1995, Stumptown Art Studio is a nonprofit community art center. During regular hours, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., the studio is open to everyone. More information is available at www.stumptownartstudio.org.
