'James R. Bakke: True Montana Artist'

| October 5, 2017 12:58 PM

“James R. Bakke: True Montana Artist” exhibit will open Wednesday, Oct. 11, the Museum at Central School. The opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.

The exhibit contains more than 75 photographic images from the longtime-Flathead artist, some of which are being publicly displayed for the first time. Curated by Kalispell master photographer Bret Bouda, this exhibition portrays numerous subjects in the Flathead’s past — from farm life to industry to Glacier National Park — highlighting just how much the region has changed in a relatively short amount of time.

Better known as a painter, Bakke was also a gifted photographer, capturing important moments in 20th-century history and breathtaking natural beauty. Although it can easily stand on its own, Bakke initially used his photography as a model for his paintwork. Some of his paintings are on loan from the Stumptown Historical Society for this exhibition.

The museum staff said in a press release that they are excited to have the opportunity to show Bakke’s photography and paintings side by side, illuminating the artistic process and Bakke’s mastery of his craft.

The opening reception, from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 11, is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

On the same night, the Northwest Montana Historical Society is also premiering “Greetings from Demersville,” an update of the existing exhibit in Hollensteiner-Stahl Hall. For the first time in 13 years, the Demersville story will be looked at with a new eye and fresh interpretation.

The Demersville exhibit is permanent, and the Bakke exhibition will be on display through mid-2018.

The Museum at Central School is located at 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. For more information, call 406-756-8381 or visit http://www.yourmuseum.org.
