Montana-made film 'Walking Out' begins tour; film will be screened at Whitefish theater

The Montana Film Office at the Department of Commerce is teaming up with the Montana Film Festival to bring the new feature film “Walking Out” to theaters across the state.

Adapted from a short story by Bozeman author David Quammen and filmed entirely in Montana around Bozeman and Livingston, “Walking Out” is a father-son story of survival in the Montana wilderness. The film stars Matt Bomer (“Magic Mike,” “Normal Heart”) and Josh Wiggins (“Hellion,” “Max”) and features supporting performances by Bill Pullman and Montana actress Lily Gladstone. The film was directed by Montana brothers Alex and Andrew Smith.

“Walking Out” will be screened at the Mountain Cinema 4 theaters in Whitefish, opening Friday, and at all Polson Theatres, Inc. cinemas beginning next week.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to present a Montana-made film, as well as an independent film,” said Becky Dupuis, film buyer for Polson Theatres, Inc. “We just don’t get the chance to do that very often, so this is a great opportunity.”

TimeOut New York recently listed “Walking Out” as one of the best films to watch this fall, calling it “suffused with Montana-shot gorgeousness” and promising it would “fill your heart to bursting.”

Special premieres in five communities will feature Q&A sessions with guests involved in the project. Guests vary by location but include Quammen, the Smith brothers and director of photography Todd McMullen.

The premieres featuring the additional sessions include:

- Oct. 15, 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at The Ellen Theater, Bozeman

- Oct. 16, 7 p.m. at Empire Twin Theater, Livingston

- Oct. 17, 7 p.m. at Myrna Loy Center, Helena

- Oct. 18, 7 p.m. at The Rialto Theatre, Deer Lodge

- Oct. 19, 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Missoula

The film is being screened at various theaters around the state in October and November as part of the Montana Film Festival Roadshow. The Roadshow will continue in December, featuring “The Ballad of Lefty Brown,” another film shot entirely in Montana.
