The Abbie Shelter recently received a $50,000 gift from the Foley Family Charitable Foundation to support major improvements to the existing shelter facility in Kalispell, the organization’s sole building.

“We are overjoyed by the generosity of this major gift,” Executive Director Hilary Shaw said in a press release. “We look forward to giving our aging shelter facility some much-needed updating. The people we serve in shelter deserve a home that is both safe and comfortable. This donation will make such a positive impact to our shelter’s condition and functionality.

“In addition, Glacier Restaurant Group donated nearly $1,000 worth of kitchen wares and equipment to the Abbie, from unbreakable plates to commercial high-chairs. GRG and Mackenzie River Pizza will also provide a monthly pizza night to the Abbie Shelter’s residents and volunteers, indicating a caring and creative commitment to the needs of the organization from top to bottom.”

The Foley Family Charitable Foundation was created in 1999 and is supported by the Foley family. One goal of the foundation is to give back to the communities the Foleys call home.

The Abbie Shelter has been providing comprehensive services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Flathead County since 1976. Its current building was originally a residential home built in the 1960s. The press release stated that the shelter does not provide adequate space for the multiple programs it houses.

Besides shelter, community-based therapeutic services are also provided on site.

The Abbie Shelter also provides a 24-hour hotline and legal advocacy in the three local courts.
