Sentinel squeaks by Braves

Missoula Sentinel eked past Flathead on Tuesday at Kidsports Complex, topping the Braves 2-1 after chipping in a goal midway through the second half to earn a Western AA conference soccer victory.

Flathead tied the game at 1-1 just before halftime, with Shane Rieke netting the equalizer in the final minute of play.

Sentinel’s Cole Reimer, who scored 15 minutes in to give the Spartans an early lead, netted the game winner 24 minutes into the second half to edge out the victory.

Flathead outshot the Spartans 11-3 but couldn:00t convert an equalizer late.

WHITEFISH — Whitefish scored a pair of second half goals to pull away from rival Columbia Falls for a Northwestern A conference victory.

Casey Schneider scored 11 minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 first half stalemate, then assisted Marvin Kimera to put the Bulldogs up for good.

Jakob Grein and Jakob Iken scored for Columbia Falls and Sam Menicke opened the scoring for Whitefish.

MISSOULA — Glacier broke dominated Big Sky, scoring the first seven goals in a Western AA conference victory.

Tyler Keller and Rohit Tappeta each scored a pair of goals and Tappeta assisted on another in the rout.

“It was a challenge after being indoors for a week-plus,” Glacier coach Ryan Billiet said. “It was nice to get out and develop a tempo again.”

Flathead and Glacier open the new Legends Stadium turf with a crosstown matchup on Thursday.

Columbia Falls 1

WHITEFISH — The Whitefish girls rallied to top Columbia Falls at home, scoring a goal with three minutes to play to earn the Northwestern A conference victory.

Grace Benkelman buried a rebound in the 77th minute to give the Bulldogs the go-ahead goal in the closing minutes. She assisted on the equalizer in the 30th minute, feeding Anna Cook to tie the Wildkats at 1-1.

“It was fantastic,” Whitefish coach Roland Benedict said. “One of the best thigns was the girls showed grit, heart and determination.”

Hannah Gedlaman opened the scoring for Columbia Falls in the 17th minute.

Glacier 8, Big Sky 1

MISSOULA — Glacier poured on the scoring, with Cadie Williams netting a hat trick to give the Wolfpack a Western AA conference victory.

Williams scored in the 5th, 49th and 61st minutes and assisted a pair of goals to lead Glacier. She wasn’t the only scorer though, four other Wolfpack players added goals in the win.

“It was a great game,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said. “We spread the scoring around. Our midfield really showed their presence. Ellie Stevens did a great job commanding the middle of the field and kept us offensively alive.”

The Wolfpack will play Flathead in a crosstown matchup at Legends Stadium on Thursday.

Sentinel 5, Flathead 4

Flathead was locked in a battle with Sentinel but fell short in a Western AA conference loss.

The Bravettes took the lead twice with the help of Shayenn and Skyleigh Thompson, pulling to leads in the 47th and 50th minutes. Sentinel took the lead just 12 minutes later, and Flathead equalized but couldn’t convert another. The Spartans added a goal with five minutes to play to eke out the win.

“It was a great battle,” Flathead coach Jenni Sipe said. “I honestly felt like it was a turning point for us. We were in it the entire game. Of course it’s heartbreaking to lose in the last few minutes. I’m very proud of how they played. All four goals were gorgeous. The entire team battled and worked together today. I’m proud of them.”

The Bravettes will play Glacier on Thursday in a crosstown match.
