The Daily Inter Lake

Breaking the record once wasn’t enough to satisfy Annie Hill.

After setting the Archie Roe Invitational records in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs last year, Hill returned to the meet for a final time with a bang on Saturday at Legends Stadium, breaking her own record in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 11.39 seconds.

She went on to capture the 400 title, anchor Glacier’s second-place 4x400 relay team and even placed sixth in the 200, an event the fleet-footed distance runner has been eyeing for some time.

“Today was a speed day for her,” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said with a laugh.

“She’s got great foot speed. There was a headwind (in the 200), so everybody was a little slower there. I was kind of expecting her to be in the low 27s, high 26s.”

Hill’s wide-ranging performance helped Glacier capture the girls team title with 118 points. Missoula Hellgate was second with 93.

The Glacier boys also took home top team honors thanks to a 157-point showing. Flathead finished second with 125.5 points, 30.5 of which were provided by Chad Hemsley.

Glacier’s 4x100 relay team — Drew Deck, Mark Estes, Drew Turner and Ethan Larson — broke its own meet record set just a year ago with a time of 42.43.

“Our kids are pretty locked in right now, and they took advantage of the opportunity they had today,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said.

Hemsley, the male athlete of the meet, won the 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles, placed third in the 100 and ran on the 4x100 and 4x400 Flathead relay teams, which finished second and first, respectively.

Glacier’s Faith Brennan was named female athlete of the meet.

In addition to winning the 100 hurdles and anchoring the Wolfpack’s second-place 4x100 relay team, Brennan captured the triple jump title with a leap of 35 feet, 5 inches (9.5 inches clear of the field) despite having never competed in the event before Saturday.

“This last week, we started teaching her a little technique,” Boschee said. “Today, she was kind of a ‘wow’ factor.”

Hill set the pace for her record-breaking performance in the 800 from the starting gun.

She completed the first 600 meters of the race in about a minute and a half, a blazing pace. She broke her own mark to beat by nearly a quarter of a second despite slowing considerably in the final 200 meters.

“She went out so hard and pushed herself so much that the last 100 meters, it was like a bear jumped on her back,” Boschee said.

Other double winners at Archie Roe included Missoula Hellgate’s Ella Degrandpre (1,600 and 3,200) and Glacier’s Ethan Larson (100 and 400) and Hunter Nicholson (long jump and high jump).

The fast times and long marks were aided by near-perfect weather — sunny with temperatures hanging around the 60s — for much of the day.

Between the sunshine and two team titles, Glacier had no trouble leaving with smiles after a long day at the track.

“It was a great Archie Roe,” Deck said. “One of the great meets. I know our kids always look forward to that competition throughout the year, so that’s definitely a highlight on our schedule.”
