A look back: A snapshot of the 10 largest urban cities in the 2010 Census

The last census was 10 years ago, in 2010. Part of the census is to count how many people live in the U.S. The results in 2010 showed more people living in some places, like big cities than in others.

Here are the largest U.S. cities recorded in the 2010 census, and some of the many interesting facts about these places that can be learned from census data.

1. New York City, N.Y.

Population in 2010: 8,175,133

Fun Fact: New York City has had the highest population in the United States in every census ever recorded.

2. Los Angeles, Calif.

Population in 2010: 3,792,621

Fun Fact: Almost 60% of people living in Los Angeles speak a language other than English at home.

3. Chicago, Ill.

Population in 2010: 2,695,598

Fun Fact: People in Chicago spent $8,996,441 on food services in 2012. That’s a lot of deep-dish pizza.

4. Houston, Texas

Population in 2010: 2,099,451

Fun Fact: In 2012, over 155,000 businesses in Houston were owned by minorities, compared to only around 95,000 owned by non-minorities.

5. Philadelphia, Pa.

Population in 2010: 1,526,006

Fun Fact: In the 2010 census, there were over 11,000 people living in each square mile of Philadelphia.

6. Phoenix, Ariz.

Population in 2010: 1,445,632

Fun Fact: 26.5% of people living in Phoenix are younger than 18 years old. 7.4 % of the population is younger than 5.

7. San Antonio, Texas

Population in 2010: 1,327,407

Fun Fact: The population in San Antonio grew 15.5% between the 2010 census and July 2018. That’s a difference of almost 205,000 people.

8. San Diego, Calif.

Population in 2010: 1,307,402

Fun Fact: Between 2014 and 2018, more than 89,000 U.S. veterans lived in San Diego. This includes all active serving military 18 and older.

9. Dallas, Texas

Population in 2010: 1,197,816

Fun Fact: 85.3% of Dallas citizens owned a computer between 2014 and 2018, but only 73.5% had internet access.

10. San Jose, Calif.

Population in 2010: 945,942

Fun Fact: Between 2014 and 2018, 39.5% of people living in San Jose were born in a country other than the U.S.
