Prescribed burn at landfill will continue next week

Following a pause this weekend, residents can expect a prescribed burn at the Flathead County Landfill to last through at least the end of next week, according to Public Works Director Dave Prunty.

Prunty said they are “more than 50%” through the pile of green material, but will have to stop burning for a few days due to north and northeast winds, out of respect for the landfill’s nearest neighbors.

The landfill is burning green waste which for years the county has separated from the landfill and ground up. According to Prunty, the county has had “terrible difficulties” finding a way to get rid of the material ever since the company in Missoula they used to properly dispose of the material went out of business.

The burn could start again on Tuesday if conditions permit and the landfill receives permission from the Department of Environmental Health.

Prunty said the landfill has all required burning permits from the Department of Environmental Quality.
