No. 27366 Opportunity to Comment on Bug Creek Project The Flathead National Forest, Swan Lake Ranger District, prepared an environmental assessment (EA) for the Bug Creek Project. The project area is on National Forest System lands on the east and west sides of Crane Mountain, between Flathead Lake and Swan Lake. This project area is all within Lake County and roughly 2 miles southeast of Bigfork, Montana, one mile south of Ferndale Road, east of Flathead Lake, west of Highway 83, and northwest of Swan River State Forest. The project proposes management activities to address the following resource objectives: reduce tree densities and fuel loadings within the wildland-urban interface; improve the diversity and resilience of vegetative communities and associated wildlife habitat; maintain and improve recreation opportunities; and provide a mix of forest products to contribute to economic sustainability. This letter also serves to notify and invite a 60-day public review on regeneration harvest openings that would exceed maximum size limits established by the Flathead National Forest Land Management Plan. In addition to the 60-day public review, exceedance of the established size limits requires the Regional Forester's review and approval. The proposed openings are primarily within the WUI and are needed to reduce fuels within the WUI, to create conditions that are resilient to disturbances, and to treat insect and disease issues. The environmental assessment can be accessed at the project Web site: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=47327. How to Comment and Timeframe Specific written comments (§218.2) on the EA will be accepted for 30 calendar days following publication of this notice in the Daily Inter Lake. The publication date in the newspaper of record is the exclusive means for calculating the comment period. The regulations prohibit extending the length of the comment period. Written comments can be submitted via mail or fax to: Chris Dowling, Swan Lake Ranger District, 200 Ranger Station Road, Bigfork, MT 59911, FAX: (406) 837-7503. Written comments can be hand delivered to 200 Ranger Station Road, Bigfork, MT 59911 (Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm, excluding holidays). Electronic comments including attachments can be submitted to comments-northern-flat head-swan-lake@usda.gov in rich text (.rtf), Word (.doc or .docx), or .pdf formats, with "Bug Creek Project" in the subject line. Comments submitted via mail must be postmarked by the end of the comment period. It is the responsibility of persons providing comments to submit them by the close of the comment period. Only those who submit timely and specific written comments will have eligibility (36 CFR 218.5) to file an objection under 36 CFR 218.8. For objection eligibility, each individual or representative from each entity submitting timely and specific written comments must either sign the comment or verify identity upon request. Individuals and organizations wishing to be eligible to object must meet the information requirements in §218.25(a)(3). Names and contact information submitted with comments will become part of the public record and may be released under the Freedom of Information Act.
