Wolfpack Theatre ventures on ambitious ‘Odyssey’

The Wolfpack Theatre Company’s Acting and Stage Production Class at Glacier High School presents Mary Zimmerman’s adaptation of Homer’s classic tale, “The Odyssey,” April 27 and 28 at 6:33 p.m. in the Wolfpack Theatre at GHS. Tickets, which are available at the GHS Main Office and at Photo Video Plus, are priced at $7 for adults and $5 for children, students and senior citizens. Seating is limited and masks are required.

“The Odyssey” is an epic tale that follows one man’s 10-year adventure; complete with monsters, gods and human foibles. The classic story has engaged and inspired audiences for 2,700 years, yet its themes still resonate today.

“I think that this past year, a lot of people have, in a sense, been trying to get back home or get back to what was normal before we started living in the midst of a pandemic,” said director and Acting and Stage Production instructor Sara Menssen. “I know at times it has felt like we are on an epic journey figuring out how to go to school, play basketball, present choir concerts, get groceries, and just live.”

The audience accompanies Odysseus as he undergoes an epic journey to return to his own kingdom. He’ll have to overcome countless obstacles including shipwrecks, witches, mythological beasts and the gods themselves if he ever hopes to see his wife and son again.

“As Athena is a guiding light for the hero, we should think about who the guiding light is in our own lives,” Menssen said, “giving us insights into who we are and showing us the way.’”

Playwright Zimmerman has woven the adventure, romance, seduction and supernatural events into one theatrical package lasting a little more than two hours.

Acting and Stage Production students helped with everything from sound design to the poster design, to the costumes and special effects.

The cast of “The Odyssey” includes Sydney Fletcher, Annabeth Henke, Sydney Barcus, Brody Cummings, Ashley Bruce, Zach Hall, Fiona Fuller, Ethan Strand, Kayanna Kapity, Maeve Kintzler, Anastacia Wood, Dresden Allred, Ellison Eaton, Kenzie Nordness, Elle Plum, Mayleen Hoover, Jauplin Young and Rain Phelps.

Alexa Wilton, Kassidy Murphy, Erik Kalvig, Quinn Thomas, Meyer Fauth, Braden Wakefield, Blake Lindemann, Moira Macfarlane, Stevie McGovern, Tristan Moreland, April Downing, Shani King, Tirzah Lamb and Elise Plum make up the sound, lighting and stage crew. Set design and props were built by Menssen's Theatre Arts classes.
