Flathead authorities plan increased DUI patrols
Flathead County law enforcement agencies will increase patrols to spot drunk and impaired drivers through the Labor Day weekend.
The holiday typically sees increased traffic and a bump in motor vehicle crashes. The weekend caps a period that law enforcement call the "deadliest days" on Montana's roadways.
Over the decade from 2011 to 2020, 112 traffic deaths in Montana occurred during the two-week period before and during the Labor Day weekend, and 38% of those crashes involved drunk drivers.
This has been an especially deadly year. From the start of 2021 through Aug. 16, vehicle crashes killed 142 people in Montana, compared to 122 during the same period last year.
Kalispell law enforcement and the Montana Highway Patrol will be watching for impaired driving through the Labor Day weekend, as part of a national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" initiative.
"We know everyone is eager to have fun and participate in this holiday weekend, but please do so safely and responsibly," Kalispell police Lt. Jordan Venezio said.
"No matter how you plan to observe Labor Day, make plans to have a sober ride," Venezio said. "Designate a driver, arrange for a ride share, or call a cab; there are many ways to get home safely."
Montanans can report any suspected drunk drivers by calling 911 or otherwise contacting police.
"Wearing your seat belt continues to be the best defense in the event of a motor vehicle crash, so buckle up every trip, every time, and remind other passengers in the vehicle to do the same," Venezio said.
