Thomas John Millar Bryce, 100

Thomas John “Millar” Bryce passed away in his sleep on Jan. 30, 2021 in Buffalo Hill Terrace, Kalispell.

Millar is survived by his stepsons, Pat (Jacquie) Smith, Mike (Fran) Smith, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, five nieces/nephews and three cousins. Millar's influences on their lives will never be forgotten.

Millar was born in Saskatoon City, Saskatchewan, on July 24, 1920, to Anna Sophia Flodin and Thomas Millar Bryce. His growing up years were spent in Austin, Texas. At age 15, his lumber mill career began when he and his brother Eric went to work for their uncles Walter and Swan Flodin in the family sawmill near Granite Falls, Washington. During World War II he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a navigator. Thus began his love for flying.

Following World War II, Millar returned to Plains, Montana, as a partner in the Flodin Lumber Company. In 1958 he married Gertrude Smith (deceased 2002) and legally adopted Pat and Mike. His tenure with the Flodin Lumber Company lasted until the mill was sold in 1986. Millar continued to consult in the lumber industry until his retirement.

During the following years Millar resided in Missoula, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Plains and Kalispell. His presence was felt wherever he went. His generosity, of self and resources, is best reflected in "for it is in giving that one receives.” His love of Plains and Montana in general was never ending. He had a deep passion for the lumber industry and all who were involved. He loved flying in the “big sky" and took every chance to crank up the airplane motor. His services were always available to his family and friends. .

A tentative memorial service is planned for July 24 in Plains.

The family is requesting that memorials be directed to Penn Stohr Field, Plains Airport, Sanders County.
