Janet Lorene Pendergrass, 71

| July 1, 2021 12:00 AM

The world lost a shining light on June 19, 2021, as Janet Lorene Pendergrass passed away at her home in Powell, Wyoming, surrounded by family.

Most people only see the world as it is; Janet was the rare person who saw the world as it should be. She had a strong sense of justice, and was unafraid to speak up on behalf of all who needed help. Those who were lucky enough to be friends or family of Janet were repeatedly graced by her genuine kindness; one of her greatest joys was finding special gifts to mark occasions or celebrate achievements. She noted the beauty of the world around her, pursuing a lifelong love of painting to capture that beauty; one of her paintings was given as a gift (naturally) to the Northern Montana College, where it remains on display.

Janet never perceived life as a competition. She instead believed that everyone deserved success. She was a tireless advocate for anyone pursuing their dreams, and shared in their joy as they achieved them. She loved cooking for everyone at hunting camp every year. She was passionate about all living things, and especially drawn to horsemanship. For more than two decades, her constant companion was Blaze, a beautiful thoroughbred and partner in everything from barrel riding to leisurely summer strolls. Though all who had the fortune to meet Janet will miss her presence here, we can all be comforted knowing she is now reunited with Blaze and riding into new, never-ending adventures.

Janet was born July 31, 1949, in Ontario, Oregon, to Chet and Dorothy Partin. She grew up in Idaho and Montana, eventually attending Northern Montana College in Havre and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental water quality. She worked as a water quality technician in Libby before retiring to spend more time with family. She spent most of her adult years as a resident of the Flathead Valley.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Chet and Dorothy Partin.

She is survived by Mike Pendergrass, her husband of 54 years; by her children, April Caron (husband Dave), Spring Gibbs (husband Mike) and Mike Pendergrass (wife Cattrina), all of Kalispell; by her sister Ruth Hines (husband John); and by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her legacy will continue as family and friends share the kindness, purpose and joy she instilled in them.

A memorial service is being planned for September in Kalispell.
