HELENA (AP) — Lewis and Clark County officials have released the name of a 17-year-old boy who died while swimming at Canyon Ferry Reservoir east of Helena over the weekend.

Elias Bowe of Helena died Saturday, Sheriff Leo Dutton said. An autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death, the sheriff said.

Bowe and others were swimming in a day use area when the current became too strong for him to get back to shore. Bowe was reportedly not a strong swimmer, Dutton said.

Emergency responders were dispatched at about 4:20 p.m. and the search for his body lasted about two hours, the Independent Record reported.

Bowe was a junior at Helena High School, where students are taking their semester tests this week.
