Jonathan Blain Smith, 75

Jonathan Blain Smith, born Oct. 26, 1945, in Helena to Ralph I. and Alexandria B. Smith (both deceased), entered into eternal life June 6, 2021.

Jonathan was educated in Butte and earned his law degree from the University of Montana in Missoula.

He served in the Army in Vietnam.

He worked first in Helena for the state of Montana, but moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the Department of Justice. From D.C., he came to Kalispell to work for the Flathead County attorney.

Jonathan met and married Margaret Earley on May 27, 1979. (Margaret passed in August of 2019).

He is survived by his children Brittany and Daniel, and grandchildren Miles Conklin and Kathryn Holmquist; brother, James I. (Brenda) Smith of Dillon; sisters, Sister Mary Lex Smith SCL of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Celinda (Paul) Hicks of Helena; and several nieces and nephews.

After retiring from the county attorney’s office, Jonathan continued serving as a bailiff for the county, as well as doing some “lawyering.” He would have celebrated 50 years as an attorney next year.

Jonathan was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be remembered for his generous service and kindness by his many friends, colleagues, church choir and the VFW.

Visitation with a prayer vigil will be at 6 p.m. today, June 10, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Friday, June 11, at St. Matthew’s. Burial with full military honors will follow at Glacier Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow at 2 p.m. at the VFW in Kalispell.
