St. Matthew's School names new principal
Former St. Matthew’s Catholic School teacher Susy Peterson returns to the private school in a new role as principal.
Peterson joins St. Matthew’s staff from her previous position as principal of Volusia Online Learning, a virtual school in Volusia County School District in Florida. She replaces Neil Bergman, who moved out of state when his wife took a new position.
Peterson holds a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Education degree from the University of Central Florida.
In addition to teaching at St. Matthew’s from 2004 through 2007, Peterson brings 19 years of experience working with grades kindergarten through 12 in teaching and administrative roles. Prior to the principal position in Volusia County School District, she served as the director of digital learning, assessment and accountability. She also held an assistant principal position at McInnis Elementary School.
“I am thrilled to bring my educational experience to St. Matthew’s and to work with you as a partner in education and faith formation to ensure your child’s success throughout their lives,” Peterson said in a welcome letter to families.
In the letter, Peterson said she takes a student-centered approach in making school-related decisions.
“I am excited to unite my experience, my Catholic identity, my openness to learn, and my child-centered approach to support our students. Relationships between families and the school are vital to the success of any institution and I will work tirelessly to build positive relationships with all stakeholders.
“St. Matthew’s is an amazing community and the love and support that I have already experienced is precisely why I am dedicated to making our school the best school for all our children,” she said.
