Hollis May to coach Wolfpack girls track

Glacier High School has selected its new girls track coach, and pending school board approval it will be longtime teacher and coach Hollis May.

May, a 2005 Libby High graduate, has been coaching middle school track for 10 springs, and also coached Glacier’s freshman girls basketball squad for six seasons.

She replaces Jerry Boschee, who retired from coaching in June after guiding the Glacier girls for the first 14 years — since the school opened.

“I’m excited to get back to high school coaching,” said May, a history teacher. “I did track in high school, and my dad (Jim May) was one of the coaches and eventually the head coach in Libby for a long time.”

Hollis May coached the throws for Kalispell Middle School, but recognizes that with Bree Fuqua and Jerry Records the Wolfpack already has two excellent assistants.

“I’ll sit down with (boys’) coach (Arron) Deck once he’s done with football and we’ll see where I best might be able to help,” she said.

Boschee, who guided Flathead to two girls’ state titles in 2002 and 2007, guided a successful program at Glacier: The Pack was third at the State AA meet in 2010 and finished second three straight seasons from 2015-17.

May’s alma mater won a landmark State A boys track championship in 2007. The Loggers’ 61 points that weekend included 60 in the throws and jumps, and just one in the timed events..

“My younger brother (Charley) was on that team,” May said. “I feel like sometimes people forget about the field events.”

“Hollis brings an extensive background in education and a unique understanding of activities,” Glacier athletic director Mark Dennehy said in a Friday press release. “She has coached extensively in our district at both the high school and middle school levels. I am excited for Hollis’s methodical approach to lead the successful program forward.”
